Low Cement Castable Refractory is a high-density monolithic refractory developed with a reduced calcium aluminate cement content of approximately 3–8%. Compared with conventional castables, its lower cement content reduces the amount of hydration products and allows a denser refractory structure to form after curing and firing.
The material can be formulated with high alumina bauxite, mullite, corundum, ultrafine powders and calcium aluminate cement according to the required service conditions. This combination provides a balance of mechanical strength, refractoriness, abrasion resistance and resistance to molten material and slag erosion.
Unlike conventional refractory castables with relatively high cement content, low cement castables use a carefully graded aggregate and fine-powder system to reduce open porosity and improve packing density. The resulting lining can withstand repeated heating, mechanical impact and high-temperature wear in demanding industrial furnace environments.
Different grades are available for applications requiring different alumina content, bulk density and service temperature. High alumina low cement castables are suitable for general high-temperature furnace linings, while corundum-based grades are designed for areas exposed to more severe thermal, mechanical and chemical conditions.

Product Features
- Reduced Cement Content: With a cement content of approximately 3–8%, low cement castables contain substantially less cement than conventional castables. This helps reduce the influence of cement-derived hydration products on the final refractory structure.
- High Density and Low Porosity: The optimized particle-size distribution and fine-powder system provide good packing characteristics. After proper installation and heat treatment, the castable forms a compact structure with relatively low apparent porosity and high bulk density.
- High Mechanical Strength: Low cement castables provide high strength both after curing and after high-temperature firing. This makes them suitable for furnace sections exposed to mechanical loads, material impact, abrasion and operational wear.
- Good Abrasion Resistance: The dense refractory structure provides resistance to abrasion and material scouring, making low cement castables suitable for areas such as iron runners, tapping channels, furnace bottoms and other wear-prone sections.
- Resistance to Slag and Chemical Erosion: High-alumina and corundum-based formulations can provide good resistance to molten iron, slag and other aggressive materials. The formulation can be adjusted according to the chemical environment of the furnace.
- Thermal Shock Resistance: Low cement castables have good resistance to repeated heating and cooling. Their relatively stable structure helps reduce damage caused by thermal cycling during furnace operation.
- Low Linear Change: Properly formulated low cement castables maintain dimensional stability during firing and service, helping reduce cracking and deterioration caused by excessive volume changes.
Applications
Low Cement Castable Refractory is widely used in steelmaking, metallurgy, non-ferrous metals, cement, glass, ceramics and other high-temperature industries.
Blast Furnace Iron Runners
Low cement castable can be used to construct or repair iron runners and other hot-metal conveying areas. Its high density, strength and resistance to molten iron and slag help reduce lining wear.
Tapping Channels and Furnace Bottoms
For areas subjected to continuous material flow, mechanical impact and thermal cycling, low cement castables provide a durable monolithic lining solution.
Reheating and Heating Furnaces
High alumina and mullite low cement castables are suitable for furnace walls, furnace roofs, furnace bottoms, burner blocks and other structural areas in reheating and heat-treatment furnaces.
Soaking Pits
Low cement castables can be used in soaking pit linings where resistance to high temperature, thermal cycling and mechanical wear is required.
Tundish Linings
Selected low cement formulations can be used in tundish-related applications requiring good thermal stability, high-temperature strength and resistance to molten steel and slag.
High-Temperature Nozzles and Furnace Components
Mullite and high-alumina formulations can be applied to high-temperature nozzles, covers, burner blocks and other monolithic furnace components.
Metallurgical Refining Equipment
Corundum-based low cement castables can be considered for selected areas of refining equipment where high temperature and chemical erosion resistance are required.
